Just one of many cool things I’ve picked up from people on 43T!
After a couple of successful runs with basic wheat bread, I decided to get fancy and try for baguettes. Ta-da! This was a fun project, though it required a lot of planning. You have to make the starter TWO DAYS before the bread actually goes into the oven. Day 2 requires the most work in terms of additions, kneading and rising. Day 3 entails pulling the tray out of the fridge to sit for 30 min. and then just putting it in the oven, so this is an easy bread to bake same-day in conjunction with a more elaborate meal.
I wish that they had turned out a little more golden, but I was afraid of over-baking them. They’re also a bit wide for baguettes, but I figure that I’ll improve on the shape next time around. I was quite pleased with the taste and texture, which proved a perfect blend of crunchy crust with soft bread inside.
I have been SO good about remembering to move my car for street cleaning. I am convinced that puting this down as a goal really made me pay more attention to it! And then what happens? This week, I walk out to my car just as the DPT guy is starting to punch my license plate into his handheld box of doom. Fortunately, he stopped when I told him that I was just about to move my car. Then I started thinking…what was he doing? There is no street cleaning on this side of the street until Friday. And then I see the ticket on my windshield! What’s this? He said it was from the day before. What??? I started questioning him. He said it wasn’t about street cleaning, it was about not having a permit. But I have a permit!!! He said, “Uh, ma’am, look at the back of your car.” And there it was, my blue, area K neighborhood parking permit…expired May 31, 2005. Aghhhhh!
So, I’ve been tempting fate all month and didn’t even know it.
The crazy thing is, I have a very strong feeling that I DID put the new permit on my bumper, right on top of the old one, the way I do it EVERY year. Could it have fallen off, or am I losing it???
Starting from zero.
