I have basil, parsley, dill, oregano, thyme, sage, about 6 species of tomatoes, and 2 types of peppers planted in my basement (just to start). I did buy a bulb, as we don’t have a good sunny spot for them. Only two species of tomato have not sprouted – Amish Salad Tomato and Aunt Ruby’s – as well as the two peppers – Purple Beauty and Pepperoncini. I am really hoping these species just take longer. It’s been a good three weeks. :( All the other ones seem to be doing well though. I just planted spinach and shallots outdoors (I’m in zone 3b) and I have chives, tarragon and parsley sprouting out there from last year! It’s a good start. I, too, am a beginner. :) I have a few reference books though.
I can’t wait until mid-late May when I can plant a ton of things outside and transplant my tomatoes, herbs and peppers.

I bought a bike, plan any trips outside my neighbourhood so that I’m multi-tasking and doing errands along the way, and we also joined a food co-op, meaning that we go get vast quantities of food every two months and hardly drive to the store anymore. We are also working to find more fun things to do close to home. Oh and we take the bus more. :)
I think the book is called The Solar Food Dehydrator.. the design looks good, it’s just that I don’t own a saw or anything else really… I’m hoping I can borrow my neighbour’s. I think it should be fine.
