Stop picking my fingers (read all 4 entries…)
when will I stop 22 months ago

I am so agitated, that my thumbs are looking a mess. I cannot stop. GP doesn’t understand, just says cut your nails really short, to get rid of the weapons. That doesn’t help, still can pick. They look terrible. I’m back on the dating scene after marriage breakdown, and don’t want to put off some nice man with my disgusting thumbs. Doesn’t help with the fact have quite dry skin on hands too.
I have cotton gloves to wear in bed, but forget to put them on, plasters don’t stay on long enough. Its strange that if have gloves on, then don’t take them off and have a pick. I f they are covered then won’t try.
Wish could wear them all day, wouldn’t be practical though. Thought about having nice nails put on, but would be embarrased to let the manicurist see my hands. I do it anywhere and everywhere. Driving along, suddenly look down and see a pile of white skin on my lap and chair.Yuk.
Anyway, wish you all the best in fighting this awful thing that takes over our life so much.

Stop picking my fingers (read all 4 entries…)
back again 2 years ago

Its been many months since i last did an entry on here. I’m still doing the same old thing and its amazing how many more people are doing this. I hate this bad habit. My thumbs hurt. I’ve been through extra stress this year and that hasn’t helped with my problem. I hope one day I can manage to stop. Hopefully someone will come up with something I haven’t tried.

What a lot of stress just to add to my problem 2 years ago

Hi, I haven’t been on for ages. I still have the same problem though. Never goes away. I wish it would as my thumbs are extra sore at the moment.
I have just been through a separation, and moving to a new house with my 2 young kids. So as expected I have been really stressed. I have taken it out on my poor thumbs, its not their fault! I went to the GP for a mole on my back, and was told to go on antidepressants as she reckoned I was depressed. Well I think I have a reason to look fed up but i’m not depressed. I summon up the courage to ask her what I can do about my thumbs after years of picking them. She says cut my nails really short, so they are not weapons and put loads of cream on. I think I have tried it already. I have moisturising gloves that when I remember, put on at night with loads of cream. My eldest asks me why are they sore, I make excuses that hurt it or just because I have very dry skin, which i do. My hands are so dry at the moment that when I bend my fingers they crack and my knuckles too. I pick my thumbs even when I am relaxed, and then go onto my index fingers when they are too sore. I am very embarrased about them, what people may think. I feel they may worry they might pick up something from me. I have learnt how to hide them. Anyway, its nice to know that i’m not the only one with this problem. There wasn’t many entries when I first came on, now there are loads of people out there who understand this problem. See you again soon.
