Teach my son to keep score at a baseball game
Untitled 3 years ago

This is another one of those things that my dad taught me, and I want to pass on to my son (see fly a kite). These are the father-son moments that are so precious (and that my wife will probably never understand…she hates baseball). :)

jet ski
SO much fun... 3 years ago

I sold my motorcycle to buy jetskis. Most, fun, ever. Even though I can use them 1/2 the number of months that I could ride my bike, they are twice as much fun. :)

New Shoes... 3 years ago

Well I went to an actual running store today, and met the very helpful and friendly owner who has a degree in sports medicine, but was careful to explain that he’s not a doctor. Either he really knows his stuff or he’s an excellent actor. He asked me if I was running in the shoes I was wearing and I sheepishly said yes. You see, the shoes I was wearing I had just picked up at Kohl’s about a week ago, with no particular research or anything… they were just ‘running’ shoes that were comfortable. He said he already knew what was wrong but wanted to see me run to be sure. So off to the parking lot for a quick jog and he confirmed that I over-pronate moderately badly. He suggested 3 pairs of shoes and I tried each set for a short jog in the parking lot. Much better! I’ve never paid full price for shoes in my life, but I guess there’s a first time for everything.

We’ll put them to the test tomorrow with another walk/run.

Edit: Oh, I drove the little road course I did earlier in the week through my neighborhood… 2.1 miles! Not bad for a total couch potoato. I’m already 2/3rds of the way there!

visit Amsterdam
And I don't even smoke pot... 3 years ago

Incredible city. Like most European cities, tons of history, great buildings, nice people… Really great place.

drive a porsche
Not mine 3 years ago

Ever since my dad owned Porsches when I was a kid I’ve been hooked. He died before I could drive one of his, but now my father-in-law has a Boxter that I’ve borrowed a few times. They are the sweetest sportscars, ever.

go on a road trip with no predetermined destination
A good way to say goodbye to the old you 3 years ago

My best friend in high school and I took off driving the summer after our freshman year of college. It was kind of our way of accepting that things would never be the same again… our lives were changing, and the people we had grown up with we would never see again. We visited relatives, saw sites, stayed in 5 star hotels and camped in muddy campgrounds.

.
.
We were right, life never was the same for either of us.

stop smoking
17 Months and Counting... 3 years ago

I quit on the day of my son’s birth. I didn’t want him to grow up around it.

I’ve socially smoked once since then (Christmas Party). I think that’s O.K. Now that I’m starting running, it is totally worth it. My lungs work SO much better.

raid 5 my file server
Untitled 3 years ago

After loosing about 6 months of digital photos (including my son’s first birthday) I swore it would never happen again. I’ve now got 3×250GB SATA drives for data storage in RAID-5 (Software RAID under Linux) and even the fileserver’s root drive is a RAID-1 set run off my MB’s built in controller.

Never having to worry about data loss again is a great feeling. Now to set up tape back up for double-secret redundancy. :)

Teach my son to fly a kite
A little while away... 3 years ago

He’s not even 2 yet, but I want to document this now so I don’t allow life to push this aside. I have fond memories of flying kites with my fater, and its something I want to share with my son too.

Write a will
Untitled 3 years ago

I must, must, must do this. I have a wife, who is a stay-at-home mom, a son, and a complex set of financial affairs. God forbid anything should happen to me I would hate to think they would have to go through any financial woes.

Even worse if we both go and we don’t have anything specifying who cares for the boy. Aak!

Build a computer
A great sense of accomplishment. 3 years ago

Especially if you are not super techno literate you should consider doing this. There are lots of resources on the web if you get lost or stuck. You’ll get a better machine, for less money, and it is a real confidence booster for people who aren’t really comfortable with computers.

Ouch, my aching shins... 3 years ago

I guess some background is in order here…

A few weeks ago I got inspired to run a marathon. About the only running I have done in the last 10 years is to the fridge. So the 5k is a good goal for this year.

Today I did my first run… Actually more of a walk than a run, around the neighborhood. I tried to do 1 minute of running followed by 2 minutes of walking, for a total of half an hour.

I managed about 25 minutes before I ended up back home, and I decided to call it a night. I wasn’t as winded as I thought, but my legs, especially my lower legs, felt like someone was trying to peel back my skin.

After some quick research, my guess is shin splints, as that’s about the right area for the pain. I guess I’ll stretch more tomorrow and also take it a little easier until I get my body used to this.

Also, on tomorrow’s agenda: find a 5k sometime in the early fall. That will be my goal.

I added this goal last week and so far I’m one-for-seven on actually doing it.

Oh well, here starts a new week!

learn to play golf
Played for 2 years, never broken 120 3 years ago

I don’t think I’ve gotten par on a hole. Ever.

This year I will LEARN how to play golf well. If I can get down to 100 this season I’ll be happy.

Get a digital SLR camera
If you're serious about photography... 3 years ago

If you’re a “snapper” then don’t bother. The complexity and expense aren’t worth it.

If you consider yourself a photographer, then you’ll never look back.

I clung to film forever. After 6 months at the helm of a D70 I’ll never look back.

buy a BMW
Ultimate Driving Machine 3 years ago

I’ve owned a 3 series and now a 5. They aren’t kidding when they say it’s the ultimate driving machine. When I owned the 3 I also had a truck and a motorcycle. The batteries went dead in both of them from never driving them. Sold ‘em both and never looked back.

“If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up.”

get a college degree
One semester down... 3 years ago

I’m taking classes through a reputable on-line university. I’ve been at it for about 2 years and I have 12 classes under my belt so far. Pshew! It will probably take a few more years, but I will do it!

(3.66 GPA so far!)

make love in the rain
It's just wet. 3 years ago

The biggest problem was for my partner… water kept dripping off her hair into her eyes, her nose, her face. Granted we were doing it in a downpour, instead of a light spring shower. All in all, not much fun at all.
