Be able to tell where sounds come from

I can never tell where sounds are coming from. For example, my cats are always scratching something, and they have a scratcher. Sometimes they’re scratching it and I feel like the sounds comes from my bedroom, thus I always think they’re scratching the mattress. Need help!
