I gave blood at the MCV Hospital Blood Drive while volunteering at the Community Health Education Center. I’m really glad I gave and was able to help patients who need it. My dad became really ill a few months ago and needed six transfusions to account for the amount of blood he lost, so I’ve seen the gift of blood directly impact a patient’s life (as well as their family and friends). That said, I almost passed out. Word of advice—whatever you do, don’t continue to squeeze the little ball after the blood starts flowing. I gave two pints of blood (as well as a few vials to different reasearch efforts, such as West Nile Virus) in less than two minutes. I apparently didn’t hear the nurse tell me to stop squeezing after ten seconds. All in all it was a great experience, I only felt faint for about a day; well worth helping save lives.
