register to be a bone marrow donor
Becoming a Bone Marrow Donor 2 years ago

So I did this in college and knew I was doing something good and now I work for the largest Bone Marrow Center in the World, DKMS. All of there donors go into the National Marrow Donor Program’s National Registry, which in turns feeds into the World Wide registry. We also make it super easy to register.

First thing you should do is, visit the link below to check if you are eligible to register.
www.dkmsamericas.org/donors/eligibility.html.
Then please confirm back to us that you are eligible. We can then send you a registration kit in the mail.
The kit will come with the registration form and two packets with the mouth swabs. You will need to read the instructions included and use all 4 of the swabs in the kit swabbing each one on the upper side of your cheek. Remember to rinse your mouth with water before hand. Once we receive the form and once our lab gets your swab sample you will then be registered.

Please remember: you should only request a kit if you are serious about registering and donating and if you are able to complete the process within a few weeks or less.

Send us your contact information and a phone number where you can be reached!
IMPORTANT:
Once you are on the registry, you will remain there until you are 60 years of age.
There are 2 different ways to donate if you match a patient:
1) You receive anesthesia and then a needle is inserted into the back of the pelvic bone where a small amount of the marrow (containing stem cells) will be extracted.

2) You receive a protein medication injection that can stimulate the stem cells to move into the blood stream. You then donate the cells by having them filtered out from the blood stream (similar to platelet donation).

Please contact us with any specific questions in regards to the 2 procedures.
As a potential donor, you could give a patient with blood cancer a new chance at life. By registering, your tissue type will be included on the DKMS™ database of potential donors for all patients in need of a bone marrow/blood stem cell transplant. You will also be listed anonymously on the registries of the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) and Bone Marrow Donors Worldwide (BMDW).

Please also keep in mind that it costs DKMS 65 USD to type each donor and if you are able to make a donation in any amount it would be greatly appreciated but is not mandatory.

  • Please feel free to contact me with any additional questions.
    Warm regards,
    Your DKMS Americas Team
