Why study automatic machine translation?

What better way to really understand how language works, than to try to teach it to a stupid machine?

Apart from examining the surface structure of language, for true natural language processing one must delve into the deep structure of language, and deal with all sorts of interesting philisophical questions, such as “what does it really mean to know something?” and “how do we represent knowledge in the human mind?”
