The Sesh
The Sesh originally came to frutition back in late 2003, but it was last year which saw it really blossom. The Sesh is a weekly showcase of some of the city’s brightest young things who descend upon the Linnet & Lark on the increasingly cosmopolitan Princes Ave in West Hull.
The Sesh has become up a very popular hang out for Hull’s Musicians and those who appreciate the amazing talent that’s currently shining bright in this city.
The night provides a platform for the ever growing directory of local bands and artists.
There has always been talent in Hull, but in the past twelve months, the city has seen an enormous rise in new bands and artists.
The reason why the Sesh has been successful in helping to bring the people together, ( very rarely does The Sesh have less than 200 people in attendance) , is because it embraces talent. Demos are played throughout the night and a visual backdrop, putting faces to the bands and artists is shown throughout on the venues plasma TV’s and Big screen. Two Sesh CD compilations have been released and hundreds of them have been distributed amongst local gig goers and local media. The Sesh CDs have also found their way to many a A&R persons desk as well as being played on BBC’s Raw Talent.
I’m quick to point out though, it’s not the Sesh that’s the bees knees, it’s the talent in Hull.
It really is a great time to be amongst it. The night has worked well because it’s kept links with those who want to see the city rise up and be counted as a creative hotbed. Websites like
Thisisull.com have been hugely influential, and Katy Noone and her team at BBC Raw Talent are phenomenally committed to giving exposure to local artists. Then of course you have the local rag
, the Hull Daily Mail, who continuously supports us by giving out gig listings free each week etc alongside the fantastic street publications like Sandman and Tenfoot magazine.
Music can be a very personal thing, but to witness it collectively with like minded souls in it’s rawess state can be quite beautiful. Not every band and artist is going to be to everyone’s taste but there really is an incredible amount of wonderfully talented people out there in this city
of all genres that deserve recognition at some level.
Plans for The Sesh are quite simple in 2006. Keep providing that platform FREELY every Tuesday and Sunday night and give exposure to Hull’s musical heroes.
For a band or an artist to perform at a Sesh night, they need to contact me at myspace.com/maks33onions or just come down to one of the gigs, preferably bringing in a demo with a bit of info. You need to have original material and not be in it for the money.
As it’s a free gig, there’s only beer money in it for some. Depending on how many artists there are on the bill.
Every now and again, I’‘ll go blind, alongside my partner in crime, Digsy, in booking bands and artists to add a a bit of spice and suprise to The Sesh but very rarely.
A third compilation of Hull Heroes is due out in April and plans are afoot for a SESH DVD consisting of live footage from the many brilliant performances that have been seen at The Linnet, with an audio backdrop/definative collection of some of Hull’s rising stars.
The Sesh has a partnership with The Grapevine Club night at The Attic which is home to the After-Sesh party. Free transport is available from outside the Linnet from 11.30pm. This is another success story for a later date.
The main point to it all is to keep shouting from the rooftops about the immense talent this city has.
