Read 50 books in 2005
Less than half 2 years ago

I didn’t even come close to reading 50 books last year. Maybe it was too ambitious, but I’m trying again this year. Gotta force myself back into the rhythm of reading regularly, especially fiction.

Chuy's 5K 2 years ago

I finished the Chuy’s Hot to Trot 5K on Saturday and am feeling great. I entered in the “fun run” category, so I don’t have an official time. I wasn’t paying very close attention, but I crossed the starting line 2 minutes into the race, and the finish clock listed 43 minutes and some seconds. So my time was roughly 41 minutes, I think.

Which I am very happy with. I was feeling pretty good near the end, even picked up my pace a bit and could have run further. The first half mile was pretty hilly, and I found myself running more than I had planned. The second mile I slowed down probably more than I needed to. I had never run more than 2 miles, so I was worried about just finishing without injury and without feeling totally exhausted.

Looking forward to another race in the future.

Moonlight Margarita Run 2 years ago

Another upcoming run that sounds fun is the Moonlight Margarita Run, but I will probably be at WWDC that week. The run starts at sunset and ends with Tex-Mex food and mariachi music.

Another two, better pace 2 years ago

Damon showed up at my house with his running shoes on yesterday morning. We ran/walked a little over 2 miles. Not exactly sure on the distance, since I had never taken that route through the neighborhood.

Alternated running 5 minutes, walking 2 minutes. I felt pretty good afterwards, and it made me realize that I had really been pushing myself a bit too hard earlier in the week.

Going to rest up today and tomorrow before the 5k on Saturday.

2 miles 2 years ago

I went out for 2 miles yesterday evening. I ran most of the first mile but had to walk most of the second. I’m not sure I could have extended it for an additional 1.1 miles to make a full 5K. But I’m feeling pretty good today and it was the most I’ve ever run.

Next time I really should start training more than a week before race day.

For the Chuy’s Hot to Trot this Saturday, I decided to enter in the “fun” category instead of “timed/competitive”, just to remove any additional pressure that I’d push myself too hard.

New shoes 2 years ago

Finally I have new shoes (New Balance 1122). My right foot had been hurting when I would attempt a simple run around the neighborhood, and that has really prevented me from training. I walked two miles in the new shoes today at lunch and they are much better.

Apparently finding a size 14 wide shoe in Austin is impossible. I got some good recommendations from RunTex (because of my silly flat feet), but eventually gave up on local stores and ordered some online.

run a 10K
Capital 10,000 2 years ago

The Statesman Capital 10,000 has a long history in Austin. Seems like a great first 10k to run, if I can get in shape enough to manage it.

Yay! I finished.

I spontaneously started this endeavor a few days into the month and I’m still a little amazed that I stuck with it. It’s a great feeling though, especially as I was nearing the end and the plot was wrapping up. Sure, the story has some problems, and it could have benefited from some research. But actually I’m quite happy with the overall flow of the story and some of the characters. There are some good scenes in there that I’m proud of.

Looks like I will finish. I made a big push last night and wrote about 6000 words. Less tonight, but I still think I am on track to finish tomorrow. The story should wrap up right at 50,000.

Trail of Lights 5K 2 years ago

I always thought the Trail of Lights 5K would be a fun first run, but I never remember about it until it is almost December. I’m not ready to run a 5K right now.

I’ll try to do another run sometime this year and then plan on doing the Trail of Lights next year. Of course, that’s what I say just about every year. Getting into the habit of running has been slow.

I didn’t write enough over Thanksgiving. I left the PowerBook at home and filled up spiral notebooks instead. Even without an accurate word count I knew I had fallen short of my goal. Last night I typed it all up until my wrists burned.

I will finish but it is going to take a lot: 5000 words a day for the next three days. Until now my top daily word count has been about 3000, and the average somewhat less than that.

Congratulations to everyone else who passed 50,000 over the weekend!

I only just now crossed the halfway point. I thought I was on my way to catching up, but there were several days last week where I didn’t write at all.

I’m still determined to finish, but it’s going to take some serious writing over the Thanksgiving weekend.

animate a short film
Not this year 2 years ago

I’ve been working on a traditional (hand-drawn) animated short film for a couple of years now, off and on, but have yet to work on it much this year. Animation requires concentration and large blocks of uninterrupted time. I hope to pick it up again at the start of the new year when my schedule frees up a little.

I’m still behind, but I feel good about my progress because I started a few days late. The last chapter I just finished was one of the first to really work, which seems to be a good sign that I’ve found some kind of rhythm to get through the next few weeks. Either that or the plot is building up to something too soon and I’m about to run out of ideas. :-)

Visit major art galleries in Europe in one extended trip
Two months in Europe 3 years ago

A few years ago we travelled around Europe for two months with just a backpack, rail pass, and the PowerBook. One of the best experiences of my life, and I look forward to doing it again.
