Made a bunch of shorts in film school, and several since, including with my students. It’s fun, rewarding, a great way to work with a lot of great people, and to create something you can be proud of.
I’d encourage everyone who is interested to just do it, don’t fuss too much about the perfect story, or needing the “right” format. (And this coming from a ‘film snob’...) Make the film, and then make another, and another – you’ll get better by doing, and a short is the perfect place to make mistakes.

The two big things I love – independent filmmaking and teaching film to high school kids in a non-profit program – just aren’t proving to be reliable sources of income. ;) (I know I love them when I do them for free.)
All the things I’ve done for money – the “day jobs” – are so un-fulfilling that I can’t last longer than 6 months, gain weight, get sick, get too hopeless, etc.
So for me this goal means assessing my skills and strengths, and finding out what positions exist in the marketplace, so I can plug them in, in a sustainable way, while continuing to pursue my central passions.
