Back in the early 90s I bought a new celica with a stick and didn’t know how to drive it!! In order to park at my apt I had to learn how to parellel park it too!
Clearly, this is something that only experience can teach you..however, I’ll share some thoughts…I think it helps to focus on the fact that pushing the clutch in needs to occur in 10 mph increments…so from 0-10 you’re in first gear, engage the clutch and shift into second gear for 10-20 and into 3rd to go from 20-30, into 4th gear to go 40-50 and into 5th to go above 50 mph. You just have to remember to engage the clutch before you shift and learn how to ease off the clutch after you shift. You can practice where the gears are while sitting still. And, it is good to know that when you are in first you can’t go much past 10 mph. So have no fear when you are first learning how to shift and you keep stalling out the car – don’t be afraid to give it some gas!!
Once you learn (and you will!!!) it is soo much fun to drive!! Plus you use less gas and have much better control in snow!
