My student Phoenix does not like having to come to speech class right before lunch. He’s tired, he’s hungry and today he had a melt-down. “I don’t want to come to speech ever. I’m going to tell my mom. I hate coming to speech. I hate coming to see you.” Wow, and how do you really feel? Sensing that this had nothing to do with me, I reminded him of some fun times we had. He thought about that for a minute, and then resumed his wailing. I countered with the suggestion that participation would earn him a sticker. “Okay,” he said. And that was that!

How I did it: First of all, I got into debt because I unwisely loaned money to someone I trusted. It turned out that I was scammed.I was able to borrow money against my house to pay off a high interest loan, but credit card debts kept mounting. I finally confessed what was going on to my financial planner, who was objective and worked with me to pay off all of the debt with money I had invested earlier. Read how I did it…
How I did it: I took stock of the goals I had written previously and decided which ones to concentrate on. I wrote entries spelling out how I planned to complete them. I wrote some more short term goals that were doable. I focused on accomplishment, completion and movement in the right direction. Read how I did it…
How I did it: I went to meetings, calculated my state retirement payments if I retire in 2009, next year, or in two years. I also talked to some trusted friends with financial experience, and listened to my sons' concerns. Mostly, I went with what my intuition and my heart told me. Read how I did it…
