So, I made a giant list of artists of import to me. I then obtained discs and discs, greatest hits, key albums, etc. Nevermind how obtained, simply that it was done.
Next, comes tagging. I am using the comments field. I am copying the moods and themes from allmusic.com. I am using genres from there. And I am intending to learn more about the grouping field, thinking I can put extra genre info in there. Really depends on what’s kosher for there.
At any rate, with the current phase, I am going album by album and am currently finishing up albums starting with E. Progress is good when you have a plan and a system.

I had a 50+ GB ITunes library that I was never getting around to organizing. I had it on an external drive. The drive done cooked and my library is recoverable only with the large application of money.
This is a catastrophe.
It is also an opportunity. I can pull a Six Million Dollar Man on this crap. In fact, if I could rename my iTunes library, I would name it Steve Austin.
“Steve Austin … A man barely alive. Gentlemen, we can rebuild him. We have the technology. We have the capability to build the world’s first bionic man. Steve Austin will be that man. Better than he was before. Better, stronger, faster.”
So, I’m taking my time, getting everything back together, piece by piece, and rebuilding it. And making sure the years are right (even on the songs in greatest hits sets) and killing all duplicates. If you have something that requires the track twice, like a greatest hits and the album, I am killing the greatest hits album. There is no reason to have it when I can star the greatest hits and have it as it’s own playlist. I get things like the greatest 100 guitar solos, which overlaps my musical tastes in a lot of places. I can use a comment or an album artist to keep them together. I can make them a smart playlist and I can order them in the playlist. Let iTunes and the pod do the work of running stuff from the cloud. Just make sure the cloud is set up right.
It is an opportunity. I am enjoying the misery of reconstruction.
