What if we found someone who already owned an island but needs caretakers for their island to prevent squatters? In return for us being caretakers of their island they let us live their uninterrupted. Something like this could work in Costa Rica or other Central American islands possibly others. Eric is right, if we start trying to come up with ways to get an island to live on that is biggest step. I have been sending emails to people that own islands or real estate companies that sell private islands, maybe we get lucky and find an island owner that would allow us to live our lives on their island. Just a thought, I’m sure most have seen this website but if you haven’t http://www.privateislandsonline.com/ has some great research information for even more than just finding a island.

How I did it: I established a connection on a island, the contact was less than honest however, it got me to the other side of the world and forced me to make the best of it, I found a paradise that was even greater than I could have hoped for on a motu. I lived in Aitutaki and was really accepted by the community and only people when I wanted to or sometimes while walking around I come a stray tourist. Read how I did it…
How I did it: While traveling in China, I asked around and was taken to a den, more like a room in the back of a diner. There was a circle of couches a few pipes, a television and a coffee table. After a bit some girls came in to keep me company, but not at all what I expected. Read how I did it…
I figured I would somewhat introduce a few ideals of how the island could work. I am very serious about trying to make this a reality.
I would like to live on a island that isn’t in a regular hurricane/typhoon path, basically I would want to live on an island for many years, maybe the rest of my life. Have a small group of people all striving for the same life-style. Even better to have people that can specialize in different areas. I would really to like to be able to reproduce anything that we need on the island thus, freeing us from the strains of the economy. I have been working on desert landscape gardening, using grey water techniques and feel that some of the same principles apply. I am perfectly happy with having meat and think that using solar power for a freezer would be a good ideal as well.
As far as water, I really think that rain water harvesting might be our best option. I think that with a few extra filters, we can learn to clean and reuse these filters without causing us a great deal of cost if any. Maintenance wouldn’t be time consuming on a regular basis. The water would be softer which would be better for hygiene and cooking.
I would like to be able to utilize the islands natural plant life but would like to introduce, bamboo, fruit trees, vegetables, and herbs for cooking as well for medicinal proposes as well.
I have spent the month or so doing different types of research on everything from digging my own water well, first aid, Hu-manure, gardening, solar power, wind turbine power, raising rabbits for food, food preparation, wildlife survival, seed and food storage, pretty much everything that I will need for a self-sufficient life. I hope to find land somewhere in the Southwest of the United States so I can start putting all this theory into work.
I keep thinking that it would be nice to have a small group people venture into something like this, but really have no ideal how to go about finding people that are willing to live this life style. Hopefully during the process of finding land and making the final step away from the grid I will find others that looking for the same type of lifestyle to help make the transition a little smoother. Maybe along the way we can come with more efficient ways to make living off the grid an easier process.
