Next week I go back to work, and I’ve gotten rid of a ton of stuff that I could just throw away, and made it through most of my backlog of “non-critical” snail mail. Things aren’t perfectly the way I want them yet, but getting closer. Now I’m trying to work out a plan for keeping them that way. http://unclutterer.com has become a daily resource, and I’m skimming 30 Days to a Simpler Life and Scaling Down : Living Large in a Smaller Space, both of which have good ideas. I also really like Cindy Glovinsky’s Making Peace with the Things in Your Life: Why Your Papers, Books, Clothes, and Other Possessions Keep Overwhelming You and What to Do About It and One Thing at a Time: 100 Simple Ways to Live Clutter-Free Every Day. I’ve got a huge pile of stuff on the dining room table that are going to go outside next Saturday for a yard sale… Boy, it sure feels good to get rid of all this crap.

How I did it: I can see several keys to my success: Stick with it. Even though I was learning in spare hours here and there, continuing to attempt progress certainly helped. Find a support group. The assistance and encouragement of my local NSCoderNight group was invaluable. People really do want to help those who are trying to help themselves. Read a lot. I read numerous books and web articles about the things I wanted to learn. It didn't always si… Read how I did it…
I’ve spent at least an hour (usually more) each day this week going through a chapter in the PickAxe 2nd Ed. I’m up to the RegEx section in Chapter 5 right now. I’ve been through a bunch of other tutorials, and this time, it really feels like it’s sinking in and I’m getting more of it. It helps that I have a project in mind this time as well. I think I’m going to go through the PickAxe for another week or so, then I’ve got an automation project using RubyOSA that I need to build to reduce my workload. Yay!
It’s been 4 weeks since the start of my exercising “regularly,” and even through I pretty much missed week three because of a business trip, I’ve gotten back on track and feel pretty good about things. Now if I could only figure out how to write code while I exercise…
