Weee, so Nikon decided to “fix” my camera since it was under warranty. Which I hoped they would. Nowadays there are so many companies not honoring their product warranties or doing stupid things like tricking the user into thinking the product is under warranty when the version thats currently on the market is not (cough netgear cough). Anyway, hopefull i’ll get my gear back soon so I can start taking pictures again.

stop obsessing
Untitled 15 months ago

Obsession can be good and bad. Part of what has driven many sucessful people over the ages is an obsession to succeed, to be the best, to do more, be more. Sadly most often times obsession manifests itself in a darker form. The obsessor rarely knows that they are obsessing. The turning point for me was to realize when I was obsessing and actively curb the habit. Sometimes its as simple as just letting go. Other times it requires a great amount of determination. I still find myself obsessing over tiny details, repeating things over and over for no good reason. But like all “habits” the behavior can be unlearnt. Just takes time; patience.

learn how to speak english, with a british accent
Untitled 15 months ago

Being brought up learning proper english and watching british comedies all my life its a wonder i can’t speak with a british accent. One of these days i’ll train my speech to be able to do this. Right now, this one is getting pushed down the priority list. So many things to do, so little time!

read as many books as possible, starting with all the books I own but haven't read
More and more... 15 months ago

I’m reading six books atm, and I’ve got a few still on the stack to get through. The list is starting to grow again. So many books, so little time =/

Understand quantum mechanics
Untitled 15 months ago

A great start is Brian Greene’s The Elegant Universe. Michio Kaku has done some great work in this area as well. Though his works tend to lie in futurism and not neccesarily in communicating QM concepts.

I want to understand the core concepts because without a PHD in high level math (calc, topology, etc), there’s no chance i can truly understand the marvel that is QM.

be a better web designer
Untitled 15 months ago

I am the same way codebase25. I’m a technical person and have trouble visualizing and creating designs. The first thing i realized is that i am creative, it just takes a lot longer to be creative than the average person. Sketching out a design is a great idea to start. There are few good starter books for getting better at design, but unfortunately i can’t remember them atm =(

Don’t neglect fonts if you are desining a site that is font heavy. It can take a long time to choose a font, but its well worth it almost every time.

declutter my life
Untitled 15 months ago

Nice prose :) Decluttering your life is hard to do sometimes. But you just have to realize at some point your stuff is starting to own you and not the other way around.

I sent off quite a bit of clothing, toys, and other doodads to donation centers. If I can’t use/want it, at least someone might be able to.

Be a super unix geek

mmmmm unix… don’t forget our friend Linux too. He’s really cool and likes to hang out with that GNU fellow. But i’m sure you already GNU that.

learn some programming and computer science
Untitled 15 months ago

I felt like I was born with a computer in front of me. I feel almost like i know too much at times. About a dozen languages, operating systems, hardware platforms. So much to learn, so little time. Its like everything else, build a solid foundation for your knowledge and it can grow to great heights.

get a girlfriend
Untitled 15 months ago

born2lose, i hear ya. I too have had many opportunities to be in a relationship and be in love. I wasn’t ready. But the thing i realize is that life doesn’t give you want you want. It gives you what you need. No matter if you’re ready or not. Carpe diem as it were.

stay single
Untitled 15 months ago

Being single gives you (or should give you) time to reflect on your past, present, and future. This is what I’ve learned. It really gives you a perspective on life and your current situation(s). Know thself and then you can know another.

learn html
Untitled 15 months ago

Gotta love those Sams Publishing “Brain surgery in 24 hours” books. I can’t tell you how many languages i’ve learned using those (HTML/XHTML, XML, PHP, C#, etc). They’re great starters and by no means the only book you should read for certin languages like C#, C++, and Perl to name a few. The hardest part about HTML is remember which tags have closing pairs.

Don’t forget to learn about writing W3C compliant code. You can learn more at http://www.w3schools.com/

lose weight
Baby steps... 15 months ago

The one thing I’ve noticed in my years of trying to improve myself is that its best to take baby steps to achieve my goal. Very few people can do a 360 degree turn around in their life. Most people succeed by taking little steps towards their goal.

For now, since I don’t have to time to train and do not have the desire to, I’ve resorted to a “diet” regimen. Its not really complicated or anything. In my case, I eat the same foods I normally eat; just less of it (since I find i overeat). I simply determine how much food I really need to eat and how much is just greed. That took a few days to figure out how much I need to eat without constantly feeling hungry. Drink water, a good bit of it. Dehydration can leave one feeling hungry and lead to overeating. So far (4-5 weeks) I’ve lost 3-4 pounds by just taking about 1/8th of the food i want to eat. Yes its a SLOW process, but thats the way it is. Rome wasn’t built in a day. (Side note: according to the current standard, losing 1-2 pounds of weight per week is healthy, any more is unhealthy). Its very important to eat sufficient food and not to starve oneself. Eating too little food puts the body into starvation mode where it conserves energy and burns less calories.

What i’ll do is prior to eating, observe what i have in front of me. Make a judgement call, how much of this do i really need to eat? and How much is just “we’ve got so much food, i can eat as much as i want”. If I’ve got a burger, I cut it in half, eat half of it. Just because I am served a full plate of food, doesn’t mean I have to eat the whole thing. If I am serving myself, I take out the amount of food I would normally eat. Then I put back a small amount (about 1/8, 1 spoon of rice, a small hand full of fries, half a slice of pizza). What this does is visually cue my brain into my process towards my goal. That way I KNOW what I am not eating in an effort towards my goal.

Because of techonlogy we have SO much food, portion sizes at resturants and at home have grown tremedously. We are not burning that much more calories per day than we did 20 years ago. We are in fact burning less as a society. It all comes down to knowning what is need and what is greed.

jamrockgirl, if its a toss up between a Canon and an Olympus, then either is a good choice. Canon powershot series is a good series and I’ve owned an Olympus and it was pretty good.

Yes take pictures, lots of pictures :)

Learn to read Binary
Untitled 15 months ago

Learning binary is great. Good party trick… Well maybe, depends on what kind of parties you go to.. Albiet, its cool to recognize and decode binary in your head. It really is not terribly useful though. Unless of course you’re a code monkey who debugs code for a living. In which case, more power to ya.

A quick google should turn up a few good resources.

watch 100 Bollywood movies

Not to sound like a shill for Netflix, but they happen to have a large collection of Bollywood movies. A large amount of “classic” bollywood films and quite a few recent ones.

Go Completely Wireless
Untitled 15 months ago

Wireless technologies are by far less resiliant that wired technologies. Although they provide a significant advantage in usability and comfort, they come at a cost. Wireless technology can suffer from interference with other wireless devices, are suseptible to man-in-the-middle attacks, and various other shortcomings. That being said, wireless is getting a lot better rapidly. But never underestimate the power of a good wired device.
