I’m on my second year of Americorps here in the states and hope to branch out abroad in the next few years. There really is nothing like service.

I wanted to live in the City since I visited there with my drama class in 2002. I dreamed of having a stoop to sit on, being near the Park so I could stroll through on my way to and from work, I dreamed of memorizing the subways system…of being a local.
Well, I did it all. I lived in Spanish Harlem about a five minute walk from the city. I memorized the subways, gave directions like a real local. But I found out that the city is so much more than the bright lights and eclectic people that inhabit the trendy areas of the city. The majority of NYC is made up of projects and poverty and materialism rotting out the core of the city. It was a fun experience and I wouldn’t take it back for anything, but I was glad to get the hell out.
