I found that NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month, http://www.nanowrimo.org/) is a great help if you continually start and give up on this goal. The point is to write 50,000 words in a month. Specifically, in November. Not necessarily good words, just getting the words down on paper is all that counts here. NaNo is essentially a month-long brainstorming session that can get the basics of your novel down on paper for you, after which you can edit to your heart’s content. This is how I got my book written.
I’ve done this, and I definately think it’s worth doing. I do not, however, think the Silmarillion is light or pleasurable reading. It’s essentially a history book, and it reads like one (or at least it does in my opinion.) Granted, it’s an extremely well-writting history text with fascinating subject matter. I have always felt like once it’s been read over, it needs to be studied in the same way one would study history. I’ve read it, but not had the time yet to properly study it. For this reason, I’ve listed it as “want to do again”.
