I’m kind of at a loss regarding this. The odd thing is that Marquette did offer me entry into the program, but I turned them down—the economy was turning bad and I couldn’t see myself taking that kind of debt on when it would so greatly interfere with my other goal of financial independence at a time when money, jobs, and credit was all getting tighter. So that was about a year ago, and I’ve spent the last year trying to figure out what I want to do instead, in a way that will let me get that PhD without having to quit working. Oy.

It’s been two steps forward and one step back, with the ultimate outcome being another 4 pounds gone and an overall loss of 26 lbs since my last recorded high point. For the first time in a while, I have a goal, rather than just making lifestyle changes that will encourage weight loss. I’d like to loose about 20 lbs by April. To do this, I’ll have to make actual diet noises, so I’m viewing this as a short term attempt to speed things up for my own encouragement.
Okay. 401(k) in place.
No consumer debt.
6.5 months of salary saved.
And the stock market crashes. So much for investment strategy as a way to get this goal met in the next few years! On the other hand, steadily keeping my eye on this goal has allowed me to be in a good, safe financial place in these very trying times. I guess my next step is to keep saving all I can until such time as I can figure out how to make what I save grow more efficiently.
