Finally got around to fixing up my bike up to a usable condition, and rode it quite a bit in the summer/early fall. However now it’s been getting dark earlier again and so the poor bike has been standing in a shed for weeks. Must take it inside sometime, if I’m not going to ride it anymore…

How I did it: I started going swimming off and on, and then saw a brochure for the Aspire swim challenge at the pool - 22 miles in 12 weeks. This is equivalent to 1416 lengths of my pool - works out to about 60+ lengths 2 or 3 times a week. I'm at 900 lengths now, going strong! It's a charity swim, so I'm supposed to be collecting funds for Aspire - they work with spinal injuries- but I'm not very much good at that kind of money so probably… Read how I did it…
My programming ‘mother tongue’ is python, but a lot of my work is data and computationally intensive, and python is often simply too slow. Hence the desire to learn C. At the moment I’ve found a middle ground – use python for the input/output scripting, and where necessary use scipy’s inline for C speeds. Debugging does take much longer though, but hopefully that’ll improve.
I started and finished one very silly-looking practice sock yesterday – it fits, even if it looks more like a moth hotel in terms of holes where they shouldn’t be (i.e. heel). I haven’t yet decided whether to tear it up or to keep it as a memento. I have small feet, but the speed was encouraging – definitely better than boring scarves!
