I called the Red Cross Headquarters in Charlottesville and signed up for the all-day Professional Rescuer CPR/AED course. Once I get my certification, all systems are go for the EMT course this summer.

I have wanted to become an EMT for years, but I have only just reached a point in my life when I can fully commit myself to it. I love helping people, and as I am considering applying to med school, this will afford the perfect hands-on experience. I have registered for a ‘Super’ EMT-B class with CARS in Charlottesville, VA this summer. It is an intensive program that includes the basic EMT course but also include many other operations certifications, such as Confined Space, Swift Water, Rope Rescue, etc… So I guess I’ll be staying in C-ville this summer at the Spretz, and take one or two classes at UVA. CARS requires a two-year commitment, 12 hours a week, and it took me a while to think it over. I love to travel and have the ability to pick up and go places; in fact, I was planning on taking a school trip to Tibet this summer. But I need the volunteer hours for med school, and more importantly, at this point in my life, I need something to anchor me down- I’m absolutely all over the place. I can’t wait to get started.
I got my first tattoo, a Hindu “Om”, on my lower left back. This corresponded to the end of a crazy phase in my life, one which entailed overachieving at a competitive prep school while at the same time dealing w/ depression, cutting, suicide attempts, and a stint in a psychiatric ward. I am again noticing the feeling of coming to the end of another phase in my life. Thus far during this first year of college, I’ve gone to the ER 6 times, been raped, contracted mono, strep, suffered from a hemorrhagic cyst, two kidney infections, pt on my shoulders and knee (and possibly in the not-so-distant future surgery for both areas), the flu, and a destructive relationship. Now I am starting to get back on track. And I believe once I have regained my health and sanity, I will be ready for my next tattoo, the left ‘Eye of Horus.’
