decide what the hell I would like to do with the rest of my life
One step closer... 11 months ago

I’ve started a new course, Understanding Maths, as a way to prepare for a MSc program in Statistics…

I’ve got a good grasp of maths, but it’s been over 10 years since I studied them, and my BA was in an unrelated field.

Fingers crossed, by October I’ll be ready for an MSc qualifying program.

get rid of debt
Almost 1/2 done!! 20 months ago

Jeez! Two years ago, I thought I’d never be at this point.

Even now it still looks frightening, but I took the time to tot up how much I’ve paid off to date, and compared it to what I owed… and totted up how much is left to go, and I’m almost halfway to being debt free.

It’s going to feel so nice when that last loan payment is gone, and there’s nothing left on the credit cards…

wake up when my alarm clock goes off
Bah! February, you mock me!! 23 months ago

You make it so difficult to stick to my resolution, what with your dark, cold, misty mornings.

But I shall succeed! I’ve already cut my snoozing time back to fifteen minutes from waking-up-at-the-last-possible-second, in spite of you!

move to Canada
More bureaucracy... 2 years ago

Looks like this goal is going to take a fair while. The CDN high commission here in London estimates that processing time for a permanent residence visa takes between 2.5 – 5 years, on average.

And, on top of that, I have to sort out police reports for every country I’ve lived in for more than six months. For me, that means three countries – US, UK, China – and I know that China isn’t going to be easy, fast or fun.

Last but not least, we have to have the equivalent of $12,000 CAD on hand (and unencumbered by debt) before they’ll consider the application, apparently. We’ve got that in our property, even after getting rid of our debt, but it’s not exactly “unencumbered,” is it? So we’ve got to save for that, and pay off our (considerable) debt first…

I guess we’d better get a move on, eh?! ;-)

see more of Europe
Lots of travel plans... 2 years ago

Yee-hah!

There’s been some considerable progress on this front!! We recently booked tickets to Amsterdam for a long weekend, Kiev for a wedding, and Cyprus for another wedding, and Dublin as well for a short trip in September. Not too shabby, I’d say!

We’ve also managed to book tickets to see my family in British Columbia and Alaska for 2 weeks, so all the European travel we;re managing this year seems all the more impressive to me at the moment.

Next year, I’d really like to focus even more on Europe – I think I would love a week or two in Scandinavia, camping and whatnot; Chris would rather do the same on the south coast of Spain and France – either one would be awesome to me.

get my british driving license
Bureaucracy... 2 years ago

I can’t get my license here until I’m able to part with my US passport for “up to five weeks!”

Given that I’m changing jobs (and need to have the passport for that until mid-July), and doing lots of travelling until the end of October, it doesn’t look like I’ll be able to get my provisional license until at least November / December. Bollocks.

get a better job
Things come full circle... 2 years ago

Bizarre… I’d been looking for a new job, chatting with recruiters, etc, and not having a whole lot of luck.

Then, just as my contract is coming to an end at my current job, I get a call from an old employer asking me to come back to them. I’d left them previously when I moved from California to the UK to be with my husband (so I didn’t leave on bad terms), and they’ve invited me to join their London office as the PA to the president of the company!

Not that continuing in administration is exactly what I’d like to be doing, but it’s certainly better than where I am now, and will tie in nicely with my “pay off my debt goal!”
