How I did it: I went here: http://www.72hours.org/build_kit.htmland I attended an Emergency Preparedness lecture during a conference. And then I just became committed to having all the stuff on hand. REI has a good selection of items that go well in this kit, from first aid kits to those space blankets. I use extra hydration packs to store water, plus I keep extra water bottles on hand. How I did it: I met with my main hiking buddy/best friend with five hiking books and a calendar. We just scheduled the dates and figured out a good goal as far as elevation gain and our end goal. I would like to do something outside of my regular twice-monthly volunteer obligation (volunteering at Bailey Boushay). This event could be donating or organizing donations for a cause, volunteering at an event or encouraging someone else to volunteer. here’s my schedule so far:
january: volunteering for the one-night count 1/30/09. The annual king county one night count of the homeless population. clothes, gloves, and other items are also provided to the homeless population directly.
feb: volunteer for or donate to a DV cause.
march: ?
april: ?
may: Seattle Works Day.
June:
July:
August:
September and October: I leave for Kenya with Village Volunteers, my eight weeks will have to cover both months.
November: provide food to a food bank and help with food baskets.
December: sponsor a family for the holidays.
