With the recent stock crash (October 2008), I’m painfully realizing the importance of asset allocation. I’m lucky that I had a good portion of my accounts in cash, but the portion in stocks wouldn’t have tanked so badly if I had allocated them in the types of mutual funds and bonds that were recommended to me for my age group. Listen to the experts. Also, dollar cost averaging has always paid off for me even if I haven’t always done it.

How I did it: I started with a really broad premise and then during October I read Chris Baty's book _No Plot No Problem_ and came up with a very sketchy outline. I also used yWriter software to create empty scenes that I filled in during November. yWriter was like a roadmap once I'd created the scenes. All I had to do was write them up. It wasn't always easy, but it was a ton of fun. Read how I did it…
How I did it: I started with National Novel Writing Month then took other classes and also went to M.F.A. school. None of that is necessary, but it was all really helpful for me. I hadn't understood the components and structure of a book. School helped me with that. Read how I did it…
How I did it: This may sound strange, but I consulted an astrologer who helped me decide when the time was right and which school to attend once I had narrowed the options. Read how I did it…

For information on how I did this, please see my entry on writing a book. A memoir was the first book I wrote. I have a second memoir I also want to write, but I’m going to focus on writing a novel for awhile and see how that goes.
I’m still on lithium and risperdal. Might have to be on them forever, but I’m trying some natural alternatives to the SSRI’s. I’m taking 5-HTP (sub-lingual), L-Tyrosine, and DLPA after consulting a naturopathic physician. These ammino acids are putting a dent in my depression and, for today, that’s enough. Please DO NOT go off your meds without your psychiatrist’s assistance, but if you have the option of seeing someone who has knowledge in the use of ammino acids for depression and bipolar disorder, I would do it.
