Well, by working towards other “43 things”, we found we had enough to buy a fully equipped second hand camper trailer. It’s really rugged, we have tested it on 4WD tracks and impressed at its manageability.
Could we really cope with it on such an extended trip?
We would have to take at least 3 months to even scratch the surface of our idea of Australia-wide, a year would be preferable.
Could this be the stepping stone towards a campervan purchase later on? There are other options, hiring fully equipped campervans comes out quite economical, it’s the price of petrol that is killing all driving travel plans right now! Haven’t heard about any hybrid campervans in this neck of the woods yet!

How I did it: Completed a 10 week course at adult night school. Enough knowledge now to undestand design and creation of webpages, however discoverd that I have access to so many free sites to share information that at this stage I will not actually need to make my own. If I ever start my own business, or work for an employer who needs a webpage designed or updated, I have the confidence that I can do what is required to have a page up and running. Read how I did it…
Original Goal: “make some curtains for the downstairs room”.
Well, I went and bought them instead. Had money available, found great quality on special (excellent value, in fact!)
So I still need to make some custom curtains so I’m amending my original goal.
New focus of goal:
1.matching curtains in son’s bedroom, custom to fit around aircon.
2.update curtains in study.
3.custom curtains for shelves in ensuite.
So he didn’t like the idea, thought it would be really restrictive, so I suggested he put an “allowance” from each pay into a separate account that I would never need to see. He relaxed a little.
2 years on, we have completely paid off our credit card, bought a new car, had enough for an overseas holiday but opted for a camper trailer instead so we can visit more of our own country, replaced our TV the same day it broke… and never gone hungry in between! In fact, we’ve given so much to other people and still have everything we need. A little of that is attitude adjustment (ie: what do we really need) but budgeting (and actually saving money!) has become a habit that we want to have in our lives. We weren’t saving for anything in particular, but boy it’s a great feeling to know there’s a slush fund on hand for if you ever need it!
