Several years ago, I sold my house to a couple and the husband was a pilot of the Goodyear Blimp. When they asked if I was leaving a bookcase for them, I jokingly said, “I will…for a ride on the blimp”. A few weeks after the closing I received a call asking me if I could get to the blimp base within a half hour…I went and not only got a chance to ride but they asked who wanted to try to fly and of course I said “yes”! It was fabulous…it flys high enough and slow enough to see everything and low enough to see everything. It only held 6 people and the only way you could get on was by invitation so I felt very lucky when other people visiting the base were asking for rides with no success.
I had worn glasses since I was 2 and had worn contact lenses for over 35 years. My vision was 20/1,000. My eye doctor told me that there would come a day that I could not wear contacts anymore. I had been sleeping in my lenses for months at a time, way before they came out with lenses you could sleep in. The lasik center turned me down at first because they did not think I was a good candidate but they told me to take out my lenses and leave them out for a month. I went back every week and they kept saying my eyes were not ready. Finally after 6 weeks, they did the surgery. They warned me over and over that I would never have 20/20 vision but I figured that anything they could do was better than the way my eyes were and I went ahead with it. My vision was 20/30 after the surgery. Now my vision has regressed a little and one eye is 20/40. I paid a lot for the surgery ($4,600.00 and that was WITH a discount from my insurance company) so that I could have an enhancement if necessary but now I know that is not possible because the corneas are too thin. In a way, the regression in one eye is good because if that hadn’t happened, I would have to wear glasses to see things “up close”, now I got glasses just to drive if I have to see things really far away but for the most part, I do really well without anything. I used a medical flex account to pay for the surgery. I am amazed at how many people have attained 20/20 or better vision through lasik but I am happy with what I have and just wish I could have done it 25 years ago!
