I’ve done this, or should I say I have participated in conversations on which this particular spell has been cast. Sometimes when I don’t know what I think of something myself, I work it out by imagining myself explaining or justifying it to people I had late night conversations with years ago.

I’m so happy about this, I think I’m about to start talking like a hippy. I’ve got lovely empty space instead of stuff gathering dust, my stuff is living in a home where it’s actually wanted, and an incident of friendly human contact has taken the place of an incident of anonymous consumption.
It’s never occurred to me to feel embarrassed or silly going to a movie by myself. On the contrary, I usually find trying to watch a movie with another person about as much fun as trying to read a book with another person. Books and movies are shared by taking about them later, not by synchronised viewing. On the other hand, I always feel a little bit dissatisfied and forlorn watching TV by myself: TV is made for talking over and laughing at and sharing popcorn during.
