How I did it: I thought I wasn't cut out for chopsticks-ever. Seriously, no matter how many people tried to teach me I couldn't get it. I gave up even trying, then I decided to go to China and realized I had to learn. So, I started practicing more and more despite many failed attempts, not holding the sticks right, dropping my food, etc., I got a little better.
