The only interest I had in Sybase was how it could improve my resume in the eyes of prospective Japanese employers. Now that that’s no longer a motivation, well… fuck Sybase. :)
We came back from Japan after 6 months because I ran out of money, but I doubt that I’d have had an easy time coming back for another 3 months as a tourist anyway.
I did get one job offer the first month that we were there, but it was in Kyoto and we wanted to stay in Tokyo. It wasn’t too much of a problem to find people interested in hiring me, but that first company ended up being the only one willing to sponsor me for a visa.
I learned a couple important things about job hunting in Japan, at least in the IT industry, the most important probably being that most hiring takes place in the summer. I arrived in Japan at the beginning of August and prospects looked pretty good, but by September there were a lot fewer openings and most companies didn’t seem in too much of a hurry to fill them. I think I would have had a lot better luck if I’d arrived even a few weeks earlier.
