I have just finished the first draft for the play I mentioned in my previous entry. I have been submitting to my creative writing workshops at Uni and have a lot of comments and ideas for the second draft which I will start on soon.
The play is about a woman who is agoraphobic and obsessed with a shopping channel and its presenter. She runs a seaside B&B. The other main character is walking coast paths alone, apart from the friend she has lost who appears and talks to her. It is a mix of comedy and tragedy and explores the themes of fear, fantasy and friendship.

Now I live in Lancaster at the University, I am only a few miles from the sea at Morecambe. I can get there on a short bus ride, Close but not close enough. When my year here is over I am going to try and get somewhere closer. Even on my limited budget a sea view at Morecambe or Heysham is possible.

Been doing my Creative Writing MA in Lancaster for 2 terms. It’s fantastic – I’m really enjoying it. I just wish it wasn’t going to be over so soon. I am working on a collection of short stories and a play. Having the disapline of submitting your writing each week to a workshop of your fellow students and a tutor is incredibly useful for improving your writing. As is attending lectures, seminars amd readings. I have also done readings myself and been on a weeks residential. I recently found out I’m on a shortlist for an international short story prize and am entering more.
I worried a lot about leaving my job and my home town to concentrate on this course for a year but all my worries came to nothing. I am in a brilliant group. We all get on well and help and support each other. The tutors are really enthusiastic and knowledgable and all writers themselves, of course.
