Today is day five of my “No Soda Challenge” and I think it’s going quite well! I made it through the morning with no caffeine, but it helped that my vacation started today. I did panic when I went out to dinner, but ended up ordering unsweetened iced tea, which worked out once I added some Splenda. My goal was to be soda-free by Oct 31, and I am definitely doing it!

How I did it: Once I finished college and was out on my own, a friend gave me a kitten I named Henry. 6 months later, I decided to get him a kitten to play with, and along came Ruthie. A year later, one of my patients had a bunch of lab puppies that she didn't want, so I adopted Izzy and Emma. How I did it: To begin with, I quit a job that was making me very anxious/angry/upset, and found a job with a company that I love. I also got a kitten (and later another kitten, and then 3 dogs), which really helped lower my stress level. I started writing a 'gratitude journal' where I note 5 things that make me happy each day before I go to bed. And finally, I decided to BE HAPPY. How I did it: First, I went to the bank and set up a separate savings account, so part of my paycheck would be automatically deposited there. Then I decided to cut down on expenditures, so I cancelled a lot of subscriptions that I didn't need, cut back on my cable channels. I am on day 3 of no soda, and it was tough today – I don’t think it’s the caffeine or the sugar, cause I made it till this afternoon, but I could just taste how good some Diet Pepsi would be! So I had some water instead…not as satisfying, but at least I’m well-hydrated!
I am seriously addicted to soda. Specifically, a large Mountain Dew before 10 o’clock every morning! Since I have not yet attained my goal of ‘become a morning person’, I require a good bit of caffeine to get the day started at work. So I am trying to make myself like coffee, since a morning soda just seems wrong! So I’ve decided that step one is going to be ‘no soda before 12pm or after 6pm.’ We’ll see how this goes!
