stop biting my fingernails
It's getting better... 6 months ago

I stop biting all of my nails except for my thumbnails on a normal day, but as soon as I go to the movies (and finish my popcorn,) they’re all gone. It’s sad, and it’s like breaking a totally different habit. The coating I put on my nails (which tastes terrible) is easy to wear on a normal day, but if I tried to eat popcorn with it on, I’d have sour popcorn and a sick stomach by the end of it. Ehh.

become a vegan
Not quite there, but... 6 months ago

for graduation from middle school, my parents got me a book entitled, “A guide for the complete idiot: How to become Vegan.” Or something close to that, I got the “vegan” and “complete idiot” parts rights. I’m not a complete idiot, and the book isn’t directed toward complete idiots. It’s actually really informative. It’ll help me in my future.

Of course, I’m not allowed to go vegetarian until I’ve moved out of the house. Parents’ rules. I’m not going to go Vegan if I’m really allergic to soy and peanut butter (the allergist says I am due to tests they’ve done on me, but I’ve never had an allergic reaction, be it sneezing, rashes, or stomach problems,) but it’s a goal for me in my future, independent life.

Learn better photo manipulation technique
My new Summer project 6 months ago

Every day this summer, I’ll be taking a picture of myself with a certain expression on my face. There will be 72 emotions by the time I’m done, and I’ll be taking the time to edit myself to have better skin and detailed eyes. I’ll also be working with random boring backgrounds and interesting props, which will be edited to work with the picture. My hope for the end is to become a better photo editor for portraits.

do yoga every day
Tai Chi started today 6 months ago

It was great! I’m doing hour-long sessions of Tai Chi every Tuesday and Thursday morning. I feel like I actually have energy, which is great considering I’ve been really sick for the past week and sick just about a month now. It’s not quite yoga, but this is a great routine. I’ll probably be doing it every day once our Master teachers us all the routines. I’m the youngest person there by about thirty to thirty-five years.

Swim with dolphins
Vacationing 6 months ago

I’ve always wanted to swim with dolphins in the ocean. They were my favorite animal all throughout my elementary school career because of Stormie the Bottlenose Dolphin at the Mystic Aquarium in CT. While I haven’t quite reached that goal, I have been swimming with trained dolphins once while on vacation. It was a great experience, they’re stronger/more forceful than you’d think! You end up getting pushed around a bit, but the trained dolphins were very friendly. One had a strangely shaped tooth though which cut into one person’s foot.

If swimming with dolphins is something you’re interested in, I’d suggest swimming with tame ones first. You don’t always know what you’re in for with wild animals (but most stories I’ve heard are just of people and wild dolphins playing and having fun. I have never had the opportunity to do such.) If you’re ever on vacation in Florida or in tropical areas near the ocean, ask/research areas which may allow for swimming with dolphins. It’s definitely worth it.

make my own tea
I found a nice, simple recipy! 6 months ago

I’d love to try some Rose Green tea. It calls for 30 rosebuds, a specific type of green tea (but I’m sure any type would be fine,) and hot water. I’d add some honey and/or ginseng and try to make something throat-soothing and energy-reviving. My status now reads my current situation. I have symptoms of both (more of Lyme than Mono, but my school nurse called home wanting me to get checked for it.) Not fun. Something soothing and sweet would be nice on my throat.

Learn acoustic guitar
I never thought I'd start now! 6 months ago

But I am! On Friday during school, I was downstairs in a study-hall while a friend of mine was playing guitar. I thought it was cool and mumbled to myself I’d love to learn. My friend looked at me and said, “Want me to teach you a chord?” So she taught me a C-Chord and an F-Chord. She said I was too big for the guitar’s size and my hands were too big for it too, but I managed. And I didn’t break it! :)

It was a success. Although I haven’t learned to play, it’s a start, and I never thought that start would have happened so soon.

Continue playing the oboe
Taking Private Lessons 7 months ago

I feel like I’m getting better. I’m going for my second private lesson tomorrow to improve my sound-quality. Playing against a near-perfect oboe player (as perfect as any high-school-senior can be and way more) allows me to realize how terrible my sound quality is. Partially because of the technique, partially because of the oboe itself and what it’s made of, and partially because I use factory-made reeds instead of hand-made ones. I want to improve my technique.

I’m using a brand-new reed though. It doesn’t want to cooperate and no matter how far I put in into the oboe it plays flat, even when I use the correct technique (as correct as I’ve been able to get it that is.) My other reeds (which have broken over time) have not had this problem at all. Oh well.

complete project 365 (read all 3 entries…)
Not taking it seriously... yet 7 months ago

Ehh. 365 is not easy. I’m taking a picture every day, but not quite a self-portrait. Being 14, I can’t just drive and purchase new batteries. My parents have forgotten multiple times to get them. I ended up needing to take some out of the Wii remotes, which my brothers then took back. Oh well.

I’ll be doing project 365 and trying my best, but I prolly won’t be updating every day. I’ll take pictures every day, just not upload every day or do self-portraits until I’m more comfortable with the time I need to edit and become a better photographer. In this busy last month of school, I don’t quite have that time.

Yuck... 7 months ago

Project 365 has not been working for me. My dad took my camera all of yesterday and gave it back to me late last night… just for me to figure out it was out of batteries. I couldn’t do a self-portrait. This sucks. Oh well. #’s 5 and 6 should be up today.

finish Robert Jordan's "Wheel Of Time" series.
Book 7... 7 months ago

I’m getting closer! I’m currently hooked into book 7, so I’m hoping I’ll be done with this book by the weekend. Then the rest of the books’ fonts get larger and the page numbers go down. It’s such a great series but the books are so long! My dad hates that I read the books… grumble... but I’m fighting my way through them. Next up on my to-read-list is “The China Study,” but as soon as I’m done with that I’m back into the series.

I got past #1 and immediately messed up... 7 months ago

I started with a portrait (my icon) and then looked for my inspiration for the next one. The next day, of course, I could not find my camera card and I didn’t upload anything. Fail, right off the bat. __

Well, I just passed #3 and I’m beginning #4. It’s not as easy as I was hoping, especially since my camera is more for action shots, less for portraits. #4’s idea isn’t going all to well, but I’m working on it. I already screwed up once, but I hope it goes well from here. I’ll probably be drawing too since I love to cartoon and calling the cartoons/drawings self portraits.

become a better debater
I did it! -Middle School Level 7 months ago

I had the CT Middle School-Level debate. Very happy. My partner and I came in 2nd out of the teams competing in the whole state, which was incredible, and I came in 2nd out of all the individual middle schoolers. My partner and I had a hard debate (trying to prove why violent video games’ sale and use for young people should not be banned/regulated) but we held our own, got to the finals, and did incredibly well. It was a very close debate. I’m extremely excited about that.

Unfortunately, I missed a baseball game for this and my team lost their first game. Ehh. It’s hard to go undefeated in baseball. We can always hope for a 1-loss-season. :)
