Completed Frankenstein last night. It was a much more enjoyable read than I anticipated and would recommend it.

How I did it: I admit I liked the idea of naming a star after seeing the movie "A Walk to Remember." I mistakingly assumed that there was a way to officially name a star with all of the stars being discovered. However, after reading some information from the IAU (International Astronomical Union) I learned that all stars are named using a number system. They compared it to finding a John Smith in the US versus finding a John Smi… Read how I did it…
I’ve only got 26 of the 100 read so far and have had this list in my possession for about five years. I thought reading some of the classics would not only make me a more “well-read” reader but also allow me to discover what is so unique about each piece and lent to its popularity.
I was recently going through my stacks of “haven’t read yet” titles and found a copy of Shelley’s Frankenstein that I acquired when I was helping someone move. I just started reading it two nights ago and have been enjoying it so far. It’s difficult for me to think of a 19 year old writing this but, then again, the syntax of even a verbal conversation in Shelley’s time would have been quite different to something overheard today. Hopefully the plot will continue to draw me in and I can see the complexities of this work which are often overlooked in film adaptations. (I can’t say I’ve ever felt sympathy for Frankenstein or his creature on the silver screen.)
I’ve completed my coursework and now have the dissertation and oral defense left. I’ve been trying to find a way to make myself accountable to completing my degree and thought I would try 43 things (one of my friends started a list here a few years ago and loved it). My biggest challenge is, now that I graduated with my primary degree in 2007, I’m working full time and have little energy at the end of the day to spend on my masters. The days that I do have off from work are simultaneously wonderful (I can sleep in a bit and relax and renew myself) and guilt-ridden (I really should be doing this or this or this…).
I set a deadline for myself of May 5th because this is the due date for my coworker. Initially I thought I would be working extra hours or additional solo days (where I’m in charge instead of having two of us leading everyone) so I thought this due date would be a good kick in the arse. We now have hired on an additional part timer who will become full time once my coworker goes on maternity leave…so it takes the mental pressure off somewhat but I still would like to stick with this deadline.
