I studied popular music in the North Down & Ards Institute of Further and Higher Education (commonly known as Bangor Tech) for three years after leaving school.
I had already got a drumkit for Christmas and could play a basic 4/4 beat. Those years were really one of the best periods of my life. I met lots of cool people, learned a whole lot of stuff I never would’ve imagined and had great fun.
As well as learning to play the drums to a decent level, I also leaned to play the guitar, read and write music, and recording techniques in the studio.
One of the most unexpected outcomes of studying many types of music is that, several years after the course had finished, I realised I liked jazz. This came as quite a shock to me! I had been into rock music almost exclusively while studying and always dismissed jazz as “a lot of arty farty crap” or similar and never really payed much attention to it. I now realise that jazz facilitates some of the most expressive, varied and enjoyable music I now listen to.
