Read Proust's Remembrance of Things Past (read all 2 entries…)
I've got to do it by January 18th, 2006 4 years ago

That’s when I’m leaving the country and I don’t plan on taking the books with me. I may have to cheat because I keep starting other books, plus I’m preparing for this upcoming trip.

Get better at chess

http://www.chesstactics.org is an online book that aims to teach chess tactics by example. Also includes a quiz that will show you random situations and an explanation.

see the strokes play
Most Pretentious. Band. Ever. 4 years ago

I saw them at Randall’s Island with The Raveonettes, The New York Dolls, Iggy Pop, etc. They were definitely not that impressive. The lead singer looked like he’d gained 30 pounds from the last time I saw him on TV and he just didn’t seem that into it. He had this smarmy, condescending attitude the entire time. They played pretty well, but no one was really into it, because the guy was being such a jackass.

take a sabbatical year and hit the open road
Read "Vagabonding" by Rolf Potts 4 years ago

Vagabonding by Rolf Potts. It’s a short, inspiring book. There’s not a lot of practical, detailed information in this book, but he does provide references to books, web pages, magazines, etc where there’s more information than you could possibly want. He keeps the links updated on his site (http://www.vagabonding.net ), where he also answers questions and writes occasional things. The book and site are both valuable resources for anyone looking into long term travel, especially on limited funds.

learn clever magic tricks
Library 4 years ago

I guess it depends on where in the world you are, but I went to the library and poked through books for an afternoon until I found some things I could understand. Then I checked out the books and spent hours and hours practicing. I later got a video and did the same thing. Card and coin tricks can be pretty good to start off with. I don’t remember the names of the books I had, but they were quite good, consisting almost entirely of illustrations. If I can find/remember the names, I’ll post them.

Learn Lisp
Scheme vs. LISP 4 years ago

How different are LISP and Scheme? I’ve been reading Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs and enjoying it. It’s definitely not user-friendly, but it’s fun, in a challenging sort of way. It’s also free. I don’t currently want to spend $40 or $50 on a book.

have a body like iggy pop
Untitled 4 years ago

Damn. Look at that.

Look at this: http://www.mrx.no/Iggy_And_The_Stooges/Iggy_Pop.html

I want to look like a leather muppet. I want sinewy, whipcord muscles. I don’t know how to go about this, precisely. I think swimming, tanning, and doing heroin is a start. Hmm… On second thought, maybe I’ll skip the heroin bit.

Try acid
Mental preparation is key 4 years ago

If you really want to have a good experience, read about it. Read “The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test” by Tom Wolfe. Read “LSD, My Problem Child” by Albert Hoffman, the discoverer/creator of LSD. Read www.erowid.org. And then be prepared for your experience to be nothing like any of those things. Could be better, could be worse, but hallucinogens are never the same twice.
The other thing is to take drugs like this in a place you feel safe, with people you feel safe with. Don’t take it at a party. Don’t take it when you’re drunk. Don’t take it when you’re depressed.
The most important thing is that you have to know yourself. If you have insecurities and things about yourself that you are afraid to face, you could be setting yourself up for a bad time. Acid and other hallucinogens aren’t like alcohol or ecstacy or even pot. Hallucinogens aren’t going to numb you or make you magically happy. You’re probably going to think a lot and do a lot of intense self-examination. Be prepared for that and there’s nothing to fear.

Read all the books in my "must read" pile
Untitled 4 years ago

The only problem is that I don’t have a pile, I have a bookshelf. And I keep getting more books. Now that school is done, I’m making headway.

Go to a Radiohead concert
Coachella 2004 4 years ago

I saw Radiohead at Coachella 2004 where they were headlining the first night. They were amazing even though there were hideous amounts of people there. I’d like to see them again someplace smaller.

By the way, Coachella 2004 was the best concert in the last 10 years.

have better posture
Untitled 4 years ago

I was slouching horribly until I started typing this. My desk at work sucks. Having a proper chair and computer setup is key.

export this data in RDF/XML
Is this possible? 4 years ago

What’s the RSS feed like? I know you can easily get RDF off of allconsuming, which is similar… Forgive my cluelessness, please.

Read Proust's Remembrance of Things Past (read all 2 entries…)
Modern Library Edition seems best 4 years ago

The “definitive” version of Proust’s work didn’t come out until 1989 in France. The Modern Library has released a new translation by D. J. Enright that reflects these changes. It is still based on the Kilmartin revision of Scott-Moncrieff’s translation. The Modern Library does a good job of translating things accurately and readably. I read the Modern Library version of Swann’s Way when I was introduced to Proust in a class and I thought it was very good. Now I’m reading the whole thing in the silver, three-volume version by Penguin, I think. Maybe Vintage.

I don’t understand this new translation that’s coming out with each volume done by a different author. How is it going to be at all consistent? It seems like they’re trying to make it modern and “hip”. Meh.

read Proust's "In Search of Lost Time" this summer
Untitled 4 years ago

I read Swann’s Way, the first volume (of 12, though it’s also published in three volumes) for a class a few years ago and the teacher told us how he’d read the whole of the series one summer when he was younger. I’d always meant to do it, but was in school, etc, etc. So I’m going to do it this summer and I’ll hopefully have time. I’ve suckered some friends into doing it with me also.

drink more tea
Untitled 4 years ago

Tea is delicious. Long Life teas are among my favorites. And I feel much better. Drinking a few cups of tea in the morning makes me feel more energized as opposed to just buzzed from coffee.
