my parents are from Kerala, in South India. They are Catholic. Their parents are/were Catholic. Their grandparents were Catholic. Their great-grandparents were Catholic, & so on.
They both grew up 10 minutes from one of the oldest synagogues in Asia.
India is religiously diverse, sometimes.
I know little about India’s history, because as a disgruntled first-generation trying to whitewash myself into blending in, I resisted learning about it. I want to know more about India, & more about Kerala.

my friend celina & i used to talk about how we should collaborate on a children’s book: i’d do words, she’d do pictures. i agonized over ideas for plots, wanting to find something that hit the perfect balance of original, accessible, fun, & weird. for years, everything i came up with was too hackneyed or too saccharine or just too dumb, but finally! i thought i had the perfect idea. just weird enough but still fun & cute, & sweet without the cavities. it’s like splenda, but more awesome, & a book.
celina & i have very little collaborative time though. we’re both busy, living in different cities, & rarely find time to talk. also, when i pitched the idea, she ever responded, so maybe she hates it. i still want it to happen, though, & i’m always telling myself to shop around for another illustrator or bone up my drawing skills & do it myself.
wish me luck!
