I hope you are all having a great Advent and will be able to spend Christmas with your families. I am beginning a novena to Our Lady of Guadalupe today in thanksgiving of the miracle of the coming of my & my husband’s first child. I feel a very special affinity to Mary while I am expecting during the Christmas season. Also, I prayed a novena the month he/she was conceived and I am sure that she intercessed, which encouraged God to answer our prayers. Our Lady of Guadalupe is also the patron saint of the pro-life movement, so I’d like to invite you to join me in making this novena!
Merry Christmas!

If you haven’t delved into JPII’s Theology of the Body yet, I highly recommend it. It’s a series of his Wednesday audiences on the relationship between women & men and our bodies’ role in salvation. There are a series of workshops run by the folks from JPII Institute of Marriage & Family in DC which are also very good if you can find a satellite group near you. I was part of one in Boston that was very good. If Theology of the Body itself is too hard-going (it’s pretty philosophical), then I hear Christopher West’s book on Theology of the Body for Beginners is quite a good lay synopsis. Lots of good stuff from the Church on marriage & family! Good luck!

Well, I’m on my way to doing this again. I got a good deal on an oboe on ebay, so once it’s serviced, I’m ready to go!

I volunteered at the Boston Aquarium when I lived there. I was the giant stuffed penguin that greets the little kids in line. It was a great job & if I wasn’t feeling loved before it, I certainly was afterwards! I also painted fish on kids faces. It was a lot of fun. I did it through an organization called “Boston Cares”. It’s a great volunteer network.

If you live near Boston, you can volunteer at the Prison Book Society. They send books to prisoners who write in & request them. Some of the letters are very moving and they want to learn a trade or learn to be better parents. It’s amazing that some prisons allow workout rooms, but do not allow libraries.

Bought the book… Can’t remember if it starts you off with Herodotus or Cervantes, but either one didn’t sound too appealing. Will have to make myself just do it, I think.

This is a really super book. I really like Tolstoy’s writing style. Surprisingly to me, there is a real theme of exploration of faith in the main characters in both this and Anna Karenina. But the various storylines are very good. Even if I didn’t like any of the characters much!

I’d like to do this in my new garden. My husband & I are in the process of buying a house with a nice-sized yard. I can’t think of anything nicer than having a little corner for quiet reflection and prayer with our lady. Has anyone done one of these before? I guess they can be quite personal. I found some websites that provide guidance on flowers with a “Mary” symbology.

Well, I’m doing my internet reading on this. Since I’ve never grown anything to speak of, I need all the help I can get! There seemed to be a pretty helpful site called Paul’s Garden World by this English guy. I trust that he knows what he’s talking about since just about every English garden I’ve seen is gorgeous. http://www.powen.freeserve.co.uk/ I think I’ll try & grow carrots, spinach, onions, tomatoes, & strawberries. Nice salad veggies (& fruit). I guess the next step is doing it!

It’s very expensive to set up a saltwater aquarium, but if you think you’re going to do it, make sure to get the halogen lights that will help corals grow. It’s worth it! On the cheap, a fish-only tank will do, but you will have problems getting the vegetarians like the tangs to live.

There’s a really great radio program online called Catholic Answers that I often download. You can get it at www.catholic.com in the “radio” section. It is conservative Catholic views and evangelization. Also, I like reading Scott Hahn & co.’s written thoughts on the Sunday readings at www.salvationhistory.org

Great goal! We love our lab, Brady. They need a lot of exercise (about an hour walk a day), but they are so sweet they are worth it. As I’m writing, she’s laying under my chair by my feet.
