I was between jobs, my boyfriend was unemployed, we took off for 3.5 weeks in my beater VW (thank you car) and a fucked up tape deck (no stereo). Yes, we picked Baja, but had no other plans than to drive across the border.
It was amazing. I’ve had the priviledge of traveling quite a bit, but it was always planned. This was a liberating experience, verging on living out my fantasy of being a hobo/trucker. Relaxing, meditative, dirty, sloppy, tiring, exciting, quiet, peaceful, at times lonely and boring, mostly surprising in a calm way. The pace of life is slow in Baja, and we needed it then in our lives.
I think Baja needs to be approached slowly and respectfully. Outside of Tijuana and Ensenada, it’s very empty. A lot of people would get bored. I liken it to a long time out in the corner, staring out the window of the car, being contemplative.
