My advice about teaching English in Japan 3 years ago

Well, there are a few ways to go about it. First thing is you have to have a Bachelor’s degree in anything. Then you can do the JET programme [teaching in public junior high schools, which is through the JP gov’t] or at an eikaiwa [English conversation school]. The JET programme apparently pays the best, they pay for your ticket, etc, but you have to apply maybe 9 months in advance and it’s harder to get in. I’m with GEOS, which I like a lot. Do NOT go with NOVA or AEON, I’ve heard you don’t get as much vacation time and you have too share an apartment with someone. Also they [or maybe just NOVA] doesn’t want you to socialize with your students [GEOS does]. Then there are smaller schools like Shane, which are mostly Brits.

So if you can manage getting into JET and don’t mind waiting [or kids], that might be better for you. Also, that’s more of a teaching assistant position.

With GEOS, it’s a business. The students are all ages, different levels, and the whole process takes a minimum of 3 or 4 months. You might be able to interview in NY or CA, but I had to go to Toronto [Vancouver is also an option]. Overall, I love my job. The company has some problems, but most do. I love my coworkers and life here is pretty awesome.
