How I did it: I stopped all sleeping medications that left me feeling hungover and drowsy and made getting up more difficult. The first night after stopping the sleep meds I did not sleep at all. As much as I wanted to I resisted the urge to take a nap during the day so that I would be tired that night. I only slept a few hours that night. That's how it went for the next couple of weeks until eventually my body started falling asleep soon after I got i… Read how I did it…
How I did it: I first confessed to the prescribing doctor that I was addicted to the Ambien and the Seroquel. I was taking it more often than I was supposed to and couldn't sleep at all without them. First the Seroquel was stopped and replaced by another medication that targeted the same symptom but without the sedating side effect. Next the Ambien was discontinued and the rebound insomnia I experienced was pretty bad. Even though I could have gotten t… Read how I did it…
1) My mood overall has significantly improved and I don’t feel nearly as depressed as I did when I started treatment in January. It’s taken a couple of hospitalizations, medication changes, and behavioral changes, but all of it seems to be working
a) I now take all my medications as prescribed
b) I have not yet missed an appointment with either my therapist or psychiatrist. AS for being open to ideas proposed by my treatment team, I think that I’ve been fairly cooperative. They suggested that I try going to the Chester House every day rather than spending time in the apartment alone all the time. i tried it a couple of times, but just felt like I didn’t really fit in. I was open to the DBT group they suggested and have been religiously attending that since April 13. I also welcomed their idea of me joining a Wellness and Walking group. Although I have been resisting the idea of talking to a nutritionist, I will be willing to reconsider now that I’ve reviewed this goal.
c) I started walking back in April when I joined a Wellness and Walking Group. Since that time I have taken the initiative to walk most days of the week. At first it was just walking on trails at local parks, but now I’ve joined a gym and have walked six days so far this week.
d) I have completely stopped taking Ambien and Seroquel for insomnia and after a couple of months my body has finally regulated itself and gotten back into it’s natural sleep rhythem.
e/f) My diet has significantly improved since January and my water intake has also improved as well. I eat a lot more fruits and protein than before and usually limit myself to one or two sodas a day.
2) I have learned a lot of different strategies to deal with difficult emotions in DBT. I just have to remember to use them!
I haven’t done much work on treament goals 3 and 4 because I’ve been so focused on goals 1 and 2.
A goal that my teatment team has since added to the mix is doing volunteer work or finding some other way to occupy my time if I’m not going to the Chester House. So now I have to make a more concerted effort to meet this goal.
I joined a local gym two weeks ago and I went 6 times this week! Cardio every day combined with weight lifting every other day.
