How I did it: I brought my friend to help me watch the kids and we went on 1/2 price Saturday. I got a lot of clothes for me and my kids for only $15! I love finding deals! There were a lot of clothes that were never worn or in great condition. The only thing I didn't like was it was so crowded but that goodwill had just opened. I'll definitely be going back. How I did it: I tried sittercity but did not find anyone I was comfortable with. It didn't seem like many of the potential sitters I spoke with were very serious and I was blown off a few times. I was starting to get discouraged when I posted a sign on our mailbox (that I made on bandflyers) & now we have a great, responsible & fun teenage babysitter so that we can go out once a week! Morning or before bed? For how long? As it is now, I check it several times a day and then get off right away if nothing is going on. This is an improvement, since I used to leave it up all day long.
We moved to Arizona in 2008, and this Christmas we will be flying home for the first time since then. I am pretty much considering that to be our Christmas present, although I feel like with young kids that doesn’t quite cut it. Making changes to our traditions is on my mind, to minimize the effects of the consumerism that is all around us every year at this time.
I got some ideas on how to do this from this article:
http://exconsumer.com/category/consumerism-minimalism/
Here are some of the things I am thinking about trying to implement to replace or enhance the traditions we already have for Christmas:
Take trip to IL every Christmas
A day of Christmas baking (gifts?)
Framed pictures
Coupons for things like free babysitting, etc.
Lights festival
Go sledding/ice skating
Focus on the experience and memories rather than gifts
Charitable giving, doing nice things for family, friends, and strangers
Go to the movies
Limit gifts from Santa to a certain #?
Haircuts, gift certificates to buy clothes, books, music
Concert tickets
