I ordered the 2nd edition of the pickaxe book but by the time I got it I found I didn’t really need it—I browsed through it to pick up the finer points but otherwise I was able to learn Ruby just using the Ruby site and irb. I find it very natural and intuitive. In comparison, I find I can’t write a Perl script of any complexity without having the Perl cookbook handy.
