How I did it: Fly to Cairo. Go downtown to the where all the buses are. Get in a minivan that claims it is going to Giza. How I did it: I've been around the world twice. Being an American, the thought of doing this never occurred to me until I meet an Australian friend who was on a year long sabbatical. I immediately started saving my money. I was just out of college and lucky enough to have parents willing to let me live with them rent-free.
