My Roth IRA

Since 2006, I’ve been doing extra freelance work trying to save up an additional $2K to open up my Roth IRA account. Unfortunately, every time I start getting some funds saved up, unexpected expenditures kept cropping up (husband’s car repairs, kids’ dental bills, etc.) that drained my funds. I just got my 1099 and it showed that I earned $3800 from my freelancing last year—more than enough to open my Roth IRA. It’s really frustrating that after all that work, I have nothing left for myself. This year, I think I’m going to hide the funds under my mattress until I accumulate the $2K to start my Roth IRA.
