6. Twelfth Night, Donmar at Wyndham’s, 2/24/09 – Solid but not particularly exciting production. I actually quite liked Jacobi’s Malvolio, more than I would have expected given previous roles I’ve seen him in.

How I did it: I wrote 750 words a day (almost) everyday for four months, and at the end I had a completed rough draft. I took a month off to get a little perspective on what I'd done, and then spent another four months rewriting and polishing. Read how I did it…
5. Spring Awakening, Lyric Hammersmith, 2/18/09 – Loved it. It was so exuberant and passionate; even when something didn’t work, they did it so full tilt that you couldn’t help but admire it.
4. Hairspray, The Shaftesbury, 2/11/09 – Good fun, of course, and I’ve always wanted to see Michael Ball live since my old Les Mis days (as it happens, he was about the ONLY lead I didn’t get an understudy for). Was sat next to a bunch of fourteen year old boys on a school trip who had WAY more fun than I would have expected, were dancing and cheering during the curtain call.
3. Three Days of Rain, Apollo Theatre, 2/3/09. A really interesting play, despite it’s somewhat dissatisfying ending, with very compelling characters expertly played. James McAvoy in particular was stunning, one of the best performances I’ve seen in years, even if his presence did mean an audience of wall-to-wall teenage girls. Will almost certainly go see it again before the run’s over, I wonder if I should count that?
