Seeing as how this pic was taken 25 years ago, I have plenty of experience.

years ago. Reno, Lovelock, Winnemucca and Elko, even a short stint in Fernley. That desert state is amazing. Raw beauty that really isn’t noticed just driving through. Every pocket, ravine and mountain offers unique flora and fauna that begs intimate inspection.
When I lived in Winnemucca, I used to take the ol VW and head for the dunes just west of town. I’d stay all night and commune with stars so close you could touch them. The solitude and silence was perfect. There’s spirits, energies..whatever you want to call them, that cleanse and make the worldly easier to deal with. Mystical…many years since, with my aged cynicism, it’s interesting to revisit my…maybe…fanciful impressions of that patch of sand. It’s apropos that Burning Man is held there, even if it is a few miles further south.
In exploring the maps to get to Burning Man, I realized my dunes are on the northeastern edge of the Black Rock desert. I can remember looking west at that white expanse and seeing the “heat waves”. So forbidding…so inviting. I’ll have to take a detour just north on 95 for the northern edge of the dunes. Ya know just to say hello to my old friends.
Friday, after 8 hours working in a building with no air conditioning, it was time for a pint at the Celtic Fox. Not an exciting place, but at least someone had vision enough to at least attempt ambience. Well, Guiness can make anything passable.
They surprised me this week. Usually, the entertainment fare is really bad Kareoke. One cannot get through the evening unless Meatloaf is played 4 times and Freebird twice. This time, they offered up a KICK ASS blues band called Cats. Don’t know if they had another clever spelling of the word, but suffice it to say, it’s the first time I’ve truly enjoyed a live music offering in this burg.
Yeah, they offered up familiar tunes to satisfy an audience with limited imagination, but they tweeked them into their own arrangements and style. I’d say their lead guitarist was on par with Stevie Ray combined with a bit of Nirvanna’s underwater guitar sound. Gave me goosebumps, a phenomena that happens with not nearly enough music. Love to hear them jamm or find out if they have any of their own tunes.
On observation of the usual audience, the word stoic would be too frivolous. They sit without a smile, glaring at their neighbors with a stick shoved so far up their butts, it defies movement. Even they couldn’t resist a little head bobbing and foot tapping. They even offered up a standing ovation. There’s hope for the poor dears.
Hell, I might step out a little more often, in hopes of finding more of these entertainment gems.
