So, I had to lay off training for 2 weeks thanks to a lovely virus that decided to wreak havoc with my system. This week I am finally back to running, but it’s amazing how much you can lose in 2 weeks without training. I’m actually sore after running now, and I hadn’t really had much post-run soreness for months prior to this.
Anyway, I think I will be able to resume my training for the June 1 Rock ‘n’ Roll marathon with no problem, so long as I avoid further injury or illness.

So, I continue to train pretty hard and make progress. A couple of months ago, I ran the Rock n Roll San Jose 1/2 marathon in 1:34:41, approximately a 3-minute PR. I took it easy for a few weeks after that to give my body a chance to rest. Now I’m maintaining about 25-30 miles a week before starting the marathon training plan in earnest in mid-December.
I picked the San Diego RnR marathon because it’s reasonably close to me and is one of the only major marathons that fits my training horizon. It also would give me time to recover and have another try at qualifying in fall 2008 if I don’t make it in San Diego.

I’ve been training pretty hard for the last couple of months, and I’m glad to say that things are going well. I just ran a 1/2 marathon in 1:37:44, or about 7:27 pace. Given that one of my fastest previous 10Ks was at about a 7:30 pace, I think I’m doing pretty well. Seems the secret has been weekly tempo runs. They’re allowing me to maintain a faster pace over the long haul. I still have work to do, though.
