work in japan
Professional work in Japan = the best! 4 years ago

I spent my first summer in law school clerking at a law firm in Tokyo.

Best summer job EVER.

I can’t even begin to describe how awesome it is to be a foreign professional in Japan, especially if you’re male and you can watch the girls get interested when you tell them you aren’t an English teacher.

Not that there’s anything wrong with teaching, of course :)

go to France
Well, maybe it's okay once you leave Paris. 4 years ago

My story: I spent a few days in Rome, then flew home to Miami with an overnight stopover in Paris.

Our flight was supposed to leave Rome at 7 AM, but right before departure time, the pilot came on the intercom and told us we couldn’t leave yet… because there had been a strike and de Gaulle was shut down!

We finally got to Paris around noon, after eating breakfast on the ground in Rome, and watching random passengers get ushered off the plane so they could make alternate connections. We got on an Air France bus to our hotel in Montparnasse, and the ride was smooth… until we came off a highway, were cut off by a young lady in a little Peugeot car, and the bus driver got up, left the bus, and got into a fight with her.

Eventually, the police pulled the bus over and questioned the driver for half an hour or so. We just wanted to leave, but the cops told us we had to stay on board.

We finally reached our hotel around 3 PM or so, and with the day going by so quickly, we hired a limo to drive us around the tourist spots for a couple of hours.

The food in Paris is nice, but Italian wine is ten times better than French wine.

go to law school
Good for some, not for others. 4 years ago

Law school can be a blast, if you’re sure you want to do it. Too many people do it for money, or for a lack of better ideas… they often have a miserable time in school, and an even more miserable time when they’re slaving away at a big law firm to pay off their student loans.

So before you go, educate yourself. Know what to expect. Know who you’re going to have to deal with (lots of type-A people, probably honor students all their lives) and know that you’re ready for it and that you want to go through with it.
