urban challenges

Not only do I live on a very small lot, but we’re also nestled into a relatively steep hill. But our back yard is flat for a small run, then there are a couple of terraces. Our neighbor behind us has a yard a good 10 feet higher than ours!

I’m going to make use of some Square Foot Gardening techniques to maximize our space. We already removed that bottom tier. I plan to fill that first tier and perimeter raised beds with things that are prohibitively expensive for me to buy organically: orange peppers, cantelope, eggplant, maybe even strawberries and blueberries. But with such limited space, I might just end up with herbs and greens.

We’ll be gone for nearly all of May, so starting seeds indoors is out. I don’t have anyone who can come take care of my seedlings for a month! So I’ll just have to make do with what can be started in the ground in late May.
